Real Housewives of New York City : Cabs on the Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan.

The drivers’ scheme, the commission said, involved 1.8 million rides and cost passengers an average of $4 to $5 extra per trip.

The drivers, officials said, flipped switches on their meters that kicked in the higher rates, costing New York City riders a total of $8 million. The 1.8 million fares represent a tiny fraction of a total 360 million trips over the 26-month period in question. Agency officials said, however, that they were alarmed....

New York cabbies caught overcharging passengers - 1.8 million times
The New York Taxi and Limousine Commission has uncovered a massive scam/scheme in which 1.8 million riders were overcharged. The scheme netted 36,000 drivers an extra $8.3 million in cab fares, charging passengers about $5 too much for each ride. The overcharging wasn't even that hard for them to pull off - the cabbies would simply change their meter to a higher per-mile fare, reserved for rides in the Nassau and Westchester area. When activated, the meter would show the new fare code, but...

So, for those of you who enjoy a puff on the road, here are five places where you can smoke in Manhattan . At least one of them will surprise you. 1. Tobacco shops Rather than single out one, I'd...

A New York pooch complete with its own stroller is pushed around Manhattan by its elderly orange haired owner. To top that off, New York has more than a hundred doggie day care center, which cost around $700 a month. As if that were enough, Manhattan itself has...

Dumb Movie Twist of the Week: "Remember Me"
The movie opens with a shot of the Twin Towers from Brooklyn. Kind of a giveaway. Then a title says it’s Brooklyn, NY, 1991–where a little girl watches her mother get shot in front of her on a subway platform (for no reason, since she’s already surrendered her purse, plus there are lots of witnesses, plus the killer fires a bullet right before the subway doors close on him, ensuring he’ll be trapped and waiting for the police to come get him). Then another title says...

Meet Your Vegetables: The Farmers Market in Winter
By this time of year, the Inwood farmers market is a slim affair. Never particularly expansive even in the summer, the shoppers and sellers have dwindled. There is a trickle of, I don't know, either hardcore locavores or devotees of the greenmarket social scene, the urban hippie parents catching up on neighborhood gossip and scheduling playdates. There is local wine and local seafood and apple turnovers the size of your face. I don't know if those are made with local flour, and...

I wish I could say that time has treated the Big Apple ladies well, and it has as far as their looks go. It's just that their insides are so rotten. Everyone is fighting or backstabbing or in...

Saskatchewan Politicians Apologize For Amazing 9/11 'Pig Roast' Flyer
A political party from Saskatchewan, the Canadian province just east of Mordor that’s known to nearby sprites and snow-furries as “hockey’s Arkansas,” recently planned a Fundraising “pig roast” for which the guest of honor would be a fireman who nearly died on 9/11, in New York City. The party’s publicists considered it appropriate, then, to promote the event with an unreadable flyer showing raging World Trade Center fireballs of terror from 9/11. (If...
